Celebrate the Everyday

Know what’s kinda insanely special about today?

We only get to have it once, and, what’s more, it’s the only day we can actually ever exist in.

We all know this, of course, as smart, adult humans and it’s borderline patronizing to point out. We’ve all thought about it, seen cute Pinterest quotes about it, and maybe even journal entries about it. It feels humdrum, but the more you think about it, the more it really does blow your mind!

But the real question is, do we live like it? I know I don’t, a lot of times.

If it’s really true, we just get today once, if it’s fleeting, disappearing, never able to be experienced again, AND the only day we can actually experience right now, then, it seems to be a day worth celebrating. Don’t you think?

A day to live fully.

There are lots of ways to live fully in today, of course, but, what I’m really stoked to talk about is celebrating it!

How do you think of celebrating, and do you do anything to celebrate the every day? I would very much love to know, share in the comments!

I think of it as sort of enjoying the heck out of a moment.

To me, to celebrate the every day means use your favorite fancy teacup, even if it’s more work to wash - it’s just collecting dust anyways! Pick some wildflowers or arrange fruit in a bowl for an everyday table centerpiece. Put on a bright shade of lipstick! Wake up a little earlier to have some time to yourself to read a favorite book of poems! Spontaneously go out with a friend. Light candles, make a playlist and have a bath with lavender essential oils! Wear your favorite heels even if there’s really no reason. Treat your body to yoga or a hearty run, get your heart racing and your mind clear! All of these things make me feel happy just by talking about them!

I believe that it can also be a ritual or a habit that is done mindfully and intentionally! For example, I have coffee every day which I very much enjoy in theory, but I don’t think I often use it as a way to celebrate the day I am in! Often I make it in a rush, scurrying around crossing things off my to-do list, forget about it, and then take a big swig on my way through the kitchen in the middle of a chore! I wouldn’t call that celebrating the one and only special today!

The times that I really fully enjoy it is when I take the approach of sitting down on the back steps, breathing in lots of the morning air, tuning into the birds singing, reading a few chapters out of the poetic psalms, and smiling as I thank the One for the people in my life and remember all that I am grateful for! What a mighty big difference that does make! How appallingly rarely I do that though! Ok, I’m determining right now to do that tomorrow morning, I suppose I’m preaching to myself!

How will you celebrate today, and live it out intentionally? Do you have any favorite ways or are you inspired to celebrate today in a certain way? Please do comment what’s on your heart below, I’d dearly love to hear!
